Where Do We Isolate the Infirmed?

Dean Barrow

In recent days, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Union has complained that the isolation ward at the K.H.M.H. is not an adequate space and that health personnel are at risk.  The isolation of persons to be afflicted is an area of concern for the National Emergency Management Organization because of the proximity to some residential areas.  NEMO, according to PM Barrow, is working to obtain a number of wooden structures referred to as Mennonite houses which will be placed in strategic locations to quarantine the ill.  In Belize City, for instance, the compound where the old nursing school once stood is being considered as a possible site for isolation.

“NEMO in particular is attempting to identify locations where things like the Mennonite houses can be placed, looking at community centers that might need to be retrofitted.  There is one suggestion that some of the Mennonite houses be placed on the K.H.M.H. compound near to where the nursing school was.  But that sort of thing will be basically for the taskforce to determine.  We at the oversight committee, through the Ministry of Finance, will simply have to provide the monies for the purchasing of units and the outfitting of premises that might already exist but which will need to be made ship-shape in terms of acting as isolation facilities.”
