Draft Senate Report on Immigration Completed, Finally

Aldo Salazar

Chair of the Senate Select Committee, attorney Aldo Salazar has completed the long anticipated first draft report on the inquiry of the Auditor-General’s Special Audit Report on Passport and Immigration. The inquiry captivated the attention of the nation, spanned several months and was conducted two years ago. Salazar has shared the draft report with other members of the committee, but we are told that representatives from the Opposition Party did not receive a copy. Salazar says that the draft report took some time for many reasons. He says that it is now the job of the entire committee to come together and finalize the report.

Aldo Salazar, Chair, Senate Select Committee

“The senate committee will produce the report. It is up to the committee to produce the report and not necessarily the chairman. The draft itself, regrettably took a bit of long time to complete, there are a lot of reasons why. I don’t want to get into that. Suffice it to say that at the end of the day, it is my responsibility to produce it, it has been produced. Now it is the responsibility of the Senate Select Committee to produce the report itself. So that means that senators would have been working all this time or should have been working on their ideas and putting their thoughts together so they can now finalize their report.”

“I believe that it was also pointed out in different news items that the Prime Minister had alluded or said or informed the N.T.U.C.B. that you had been abandoned by other senators in compiling this report.”

Aldo Salazar

“I don’t really want to get into a back and forth because I am not the type of person who likes to cast blame on individuals and I don’t necessarily want to take the route of some of our colleagues and discuss what has been said within the confines of our deliberation. Suffice it to say though that in the inception, and I will say this, it was never my responsibility alone to put together even the draft. I have taken the responsibility for it. I have been the scapegoat for it. I will live with that. That is fine.”

Hipolito Novelo

“When can we expect it to be tabled before the House?”

Aldo Salazar

“That is not a matter which I control to be honest. As I said I would have controlled the original part if I had been more proactive, I would take responsibility for that, by taking the bull by its horn and ensuring that the first draft was ready prior to this. Yes I could have done that but like is said, my personal exigencies which kind of got in the what. But in terms of this last part, I as the chairman I am not responsible for finalizing the report. The report will be finalized by the members of the committee.”
