P.U.P. Senator Says G.O.B. Not Doing Enough to Prepare for COVID-19

Isabel Bennett

The Government of Belize has allocated nine hundred thousand dollars in response to COVID-19.  Belize has yet to confirm a case, but health officials say that it is just a matter of time.  During the sitting of the Senate on Tuesday, P.U.P. senator Isabel Bennett challenged the government to do more to protect and keep the public safe from the deadly disease.  Bennett says that the government has failed to be proactive in the face of a quickly spreading virus.

Isabel Bennett, P.U.P. Senator

“For us in Belize tourism is one of the main source of revenue and if we have left the gates so wide open, not to my mind being proactive as we should in the healthcare system then we are leaving the public to what? When our workers get sick it simply means that there is less productivity. When our workers have to be quarantined for fourteen days or more that is less productivity. So what happens to the GDP then? In a recent trip to Barbados which was earlier in February on arriving at the international airport there were health professional on the ground taking temperature literally of all the persons entering the airport. On arriving back home even thought there was a scare leaving the Philip Goldson Airport, when you return there were personal one or two but you could have seen literally checking immigration papers. I could not see the proactiveness in that. Ad even after he corona virus was sent as an alarm by the World Health Organization from December 2019 we were as a people just informed by the Ministry of Health, allocated with nine hundred thousand dollars for this world epidemic. Basically just six days ago. It is unacceptable by our leaders; we must always protect the public first. What was happening between December of last year up to February of this year? Was the focus on the people on this nation even though the corona virus was lowering itself all around the world? Were we too busy on ourselves and didn’t bother to put attention on the people of this nation first? We were so occupied with leadership, not paying attention to the crime in the face of corruption, drug planes.”

Darrell Bradley, President, Senate

“Senator you cannot go wider outside the marker.”

Isabel Bennett

“I am pointing out Mr. President and I thank you for the guidance that if focus is given to the people of this country knowing that there is a global alarm on health that should have been the priority of the government.”
