John Saldivar’s Turn at No Confidence Motion

John Saldivar

Sitting way to back after leaving Cabinet, Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar also weighed in on the no confidence motion by drawing comparisons between the present government and the P.U.P. government of the past.  It is a juxtaposition that has long since become trite, to the point that it lacks any real punch, but for the Barrow administration it is tried and true.

John Saldivar, Area Representative, Belmopan

“If this vote of no confidence were to succeed today, it would mean that they would get a chance to become the government…If they are, Madame Speaker, the option, the alternative that this country has then we must compare our records and at the end of the day when we are done with that comparison, I am sure that the Belizean people will give this administration another vote of confidence.  A vote of confidence that has been repeated in three general elections, a vote of confidence that has been repeated in four municipal elections, and Madame Speaker, if things were so bad as the members over there have painted and as the member for Lake-I in his usual style tried to paint, how come it is that only less than a year ago there wasn’t this overwhelming victory for the People’s United Party in village council elections.  How come it is that the people have not risen up against this government?  And don’t tell me about your crowd which we have questions about that.  At my launching I had over six thousand, so we can put together numbers just like how you can put together numbers, because as much there are thirty percent or forty percent of this country that’s U.D.P., just about the same amount are P.U.P. and we could bring crowd just like unu.”
