Santa Cruz Villagers Picket House Meeting

Residents from the community of Santa Cruz in Stann Creek District journeyed to Belmopan on Thursday morning where they picketed government over a land dispute in their village.  At the heart of the argument is the approval of a lease granted to Belize Wind Energy Limited by the Ministry of Natural Resources.  The lease which was granted last year allows the company to proceed with the development of two thousand acres of land which encompasses portion of Santa Cruz.  Area Representative Rodwell Ferguson commented briefly on the situation.

Rodwell Ferguson, Area Representative, Stann Creek West

“The people came out today and they want to protest and so I am supporting them a hundred percent.”

Reporter

“Sir, can you tell us when this land lease or this land title was granted.”

Rodwell Ferguson

Rodwell Ferguson

“I believe it was issued in November 2018 to one Windmill Development Limited.”

Reporter

“Was there any consultation as you know with any of the chairpersons current or former?”

Rodwell Ferguson

“Absolutely no consultation.  We only heard about it when we heard a release was issued and now the guy is barricading the land that nobody cannot enter the property.”

Reporter

“Okay, as you said that land encompasses three communities.”

Rodwell Ferguson

“Three communities and in particular Santa Cruz, some houses are a part of the two thousand acres.  So people are going to lose their homes.”

Reporter

“Has there been any attempt to contact the principals of the company by yourself or any of the chairpersons?”

Rodwell Ferguson

“At the moment no because we just got the information in black and white about a day or two ago and so now as we go back we are going to be contacting them.”
