UNICEF Champions WASH in Belize

Denise Robateau

UNICEF has been championing the WASH initiative, as clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are needed for survival and development of children. The WASH team works in over one hundred countries worldwide to improve water and sanitation services, as well as basic hygiene practices. Denise Robateau of UNICEF shares more about their role.

Denise Robateau, Early Childhood Development and Education Officer, UNICEF

“UNICEF supports the multisectoral body with technical expertise from the region; whatever is needed, as well as with resources. What happens is that we do work with sanitation and hygiene in schools. We have supported remodeling of bathrooms; infrastructure. The physical infrastructure is just one part, the soft side of that work is the change of behavior; the communication; the practices that we want to see such as proper hygiene, hand washing; healthy students and healthy communities. To achieve that, we have to work together. So, today, UNICEF is supporting the stakeholders’ consultation and we are also supporting the development of the standard operating procedures in schools and communities.  All of these different partners are now sitting together as a multisectoral body to develop this guideline to say that these are the things we should consider so that there is sustainability for this work and so that there are better practices in our community.”
