Several Persons Detained for Michael Barrera’s Murder

Michael Barrera

Police say that they have several persons detained in connection with the fatal shooting of Michael Barrera. The social worker was shot dead on Tuesday evening as he waited to buy food from a restaurant on Central American Boulevard. As we’ve reported, police confirmed the family’s theory that Barrera was not the intended target; he was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Today, Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo shared the official report on the murder of the well-known counselor for at risk youth.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Upon arrival, they observed the motionless body of a male person who was identified as fifty-two-year-old Michael Barrera suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his body. What police understand is that Barrera was riding his bicycle in that area and had stopped to purchase some items in front of a shop when a male person came from Iguana Street at another person that was outside of the restaurant, causing the injuries of Mr. Barrera.”

“So, for all intents and purposes, Mr. Barrera wasn’t the intended target?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, that is what we believe that he wasn’t the intended target; that it was another male person in front of the shop along with him.”

“Sir, we had received reports that after that fatal shooting in front of Bravo Store, we understand that the shooter may have chased another individual down Iguana Street and fired additional shots, can you confirm?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes. We have the same information and the person that was being chased was the same intended target that ran through Iguana Street where a number of shots were fired at him. Fortunately, he escaped unhurt.”

“Have that person, the intended target, and the shooter been identified by investigators?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We have several persons detained at this moment that police are interviewing.  We suspect that it is gang related. It is issues coming from the past and we believe the person was just sighted in that area.”
