Was Gregory Martinez’s Murder a Retaliation?

Gregory Martinez

On Monday afternoon, Gregory Martinez tried to get away from his killer, but he was shot dead inside a dollar van.  The shots also resulted in injuries to a couple and their eight-month-old baby.  The family survived the gun violence, but police say the bullets were meant for Martinez and it may have been as a result of a shooting on Friday night.

“Police responded to shots fired in the Police Street area and as a result, they proceeded to the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital, where upon arrival, at the emergency section on the ramp, police observed a dark blue color van and inside the van was the motionless body of a male person later identified as twenty-three-year-old Gregory Martinez of Police Street. He was also seen with apparent gunshot wounds to the body. Police made checks inside the KHMH A& E section where they observed three other persons being attended with injuries. One of the persons was thirty-four-year-old Francisco Eddy Avilez; his wife, twenty-year-old Delmy Avilez and an eight-month old child who was suffering from small wounds from the debris due to the shattered glass. What police understand is that Gregory Martinez was inside a yard at Police Station when a male person entered the yard and started to fire shots at him. He ran from Police Street into some back yard and on to Mahogany Street Extension where he saw an oncoming van and he stopped the van and jumped in. As the van was speeding off, the male person approached the van and fired other shots which caused the injuries to Martinez and the two other passengers inside the van. Mr. Avilez was admitted in a stable condition. Delmy Avilez and the child were treated and they were discharged later in the night.”

“Do we have an idea why he was killed?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“What we understand is that it is an ongoing dispute that is in that area of Police Street.”

Andrea Polanco

“Anyone detained or being questioned?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Police have detained a group of persons from that location and they are presently in custody. There is another group that was detained; I think last night.”

“Sir, any relation of that shooting and the shooting of Baptist on Friday night?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“We believe that they are connected.”
