Unions Will Act if Government Does Not Comply with Demands

Marvin Mora

The Public Service Union is echoing the call by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize to stamp out corruption as P.M. Dean Barrow had promised years ago when he said he would use his two-edged machete. The P.S.U. has maintained that G.O.B.’s inaction and unwillingness to act forcefully against corruption has made the matter worse. Like the N.T.U.C.B.  the P.S.U. expects that the budget presented will include allocations to properly fund the Integrity Commission and UNCAC. These are part of the N.T.U.C.B. demands and President Marvin Mora says the unions’ next step will be determined by what is presented in the budget this Thursday.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B

“This first deadline will be this coming Thursday to see what the reaction will be in regards what we are asking for the budget especially in regards to the UNCAC itself and the Integrity Commission where we want to see some substantial allocation of funds. At the end of the day all the issue eventually ends up in situation just like that where people end up losing their jobs. We cannot continue sitting and not doing anything about it. It is high time to deal with it. We are just starting with the lien of demands that we should have been making a long time ago. It has taken us so long because we have given this process all the respect that it deserves. We have worked the process and obviously there is no change. So if there is no change and there is no movement on behalf of the government then we will proceed with our action. We will proceed with our strategy. We are not here to decide which party you want to elect. That is up to you. We have to make that every clear but we want to assure that we are here in the best interest of our country. We want to respect the law but at the same time those in power also respect the law. The times are changing and that is a clear indication that the workers are right now making up their mind to stand their grounds and take action if needed.”
