3 cops to be placed on interdiction for extortion charge

Chester Williams

Three cops attached to the San Ignacio Police Station are to be placed on interdiction following a charge of extortion. There are concerns that the cops were not placed on interdiction immediately, as they remain on duty. Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams responded to questions about why the officers aren’t on interdiction as yet:

Reporter

“Sir, in San Ignacio on Friday, three officers were criminally charged for extortion on Friday and I am hearing from the community that they remain on active duty. Will you put them on interdiction?”

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Yes, they will be placed on interdiction. I have not been able to look at it because I have been extremely busy over the past few days.”

Reporter

“Is it something that needs to be looked at, sir? I mean, three cops charged for extortion and I know they are innocent until proven guilty but it erodes the public confidence?”

Chester Williams

“Of course, they should have been placed already. I don’t know why it has not yet been done because the legal advisor and the commander personnel can proceed with that without my permission. It is automatic, so.”

Reporter

“I know one of them is on the village water board, which is appointed by the area representative who is a minister of good standing. So, I am just wondering if there is a political influence in a hands off situation?”

Chester Williams

“No. No. I don’t play that kind of game. If a police officer has done something wrong, then the law will follow. Whatever process needs to be followed, we will follow. It is not a political issue. I am not too familiar with the names but I am familiar with the circumstances and they will be placed on interdiction. One of them is a special constable and because of the fact that he is a special constable, I have no authority to interdict. That will have to be through the Ministry and I believe that may have been the hold back.”
