Guatemalan Robbers Target Tourists at El Pilar

There was a robbery of tourists at El Pilar Site over the weekend. The visitors were along with their tour guides when they were targeted. They report that four men, one armed with a rifle and another yielding a machete, attacked them jacking their personal items and fleeing across the border into Guatemala. Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch A.C.P. Joseph Myvett says that security will be increased in the area.

“The scene was visited by police where they observed two Belizean tour guides along with two tourists who reported to them that while site seeing in the area they were approached by four Hispanic males, three of whom were armed with machetes and one with rifle. As a result they were robbed of their personal belongings and the driver side window of the vehicle was damaged by those persons before they made good their escape towards the Guatemalan side.”

“So then it is suspected that it were Guatemalans who came over the border?”

“Yes, we do believe so.”

“Does this raise security concerns?”

 

ACP Joseph Myvett

“There have been a composite patrol of BDF and police officer patrolling those areas. Unfortunately in that point and time they were not in that area. Also, there is a composite team of BDF and police officers stationed at a check point on the Bullet Tree Road. The victim’s was there. Those persons came from within the bushes on foot and they left on foot after robbing the victims.”

“Will security be heightened in the area?”

“Certainly the patrols will be more frequent and I am also aware there are foot patrols being conducted by the BDF in that area and those patrol harbor for a couple of days before moving to another location.”
