Port of Belize says it will Hold CWU Accountable

Chief Executive officer for the Port of Belize Limited Arturo Vasquez wrote to C.W.U. President, Evan Mose Hyde. In the letter, Vasquez tells Hyde that Gang Number Two has refused to carry out cargo operations and in his view it constitutes illegal strike action in clear violation of the Settlement of Disputes in the Essential Services Act. Vasquez tells Hyde that the Port reserves all rights concerning this matter and that it will hold the C.W.U. accountable for all damages incurred as a result of the illegal strike action. Hyde dismissed Vasquez’s letter.

“We have not gotten an actual communication from the management. As we said to our members today, the union and the reps of the stevedores have been underneath that shed. Management doesn’t even have to use the phone they just need to peep through the door and holler our name. Yet they are playing like they don’t see us, like they don’t hear us but they send a letter to threaten us. And we are supposed to respond to that? No man.  When you are telling me that we have to pay for damages, I don’t want- we don’t have time to follow that. But we will speak about their behavior. We will speak about their acts. They have failed to talk us, to communicated with us and treat us with any kind of respect and they continue to behave in an arrogant fashion.”
