MOH Rolls Out Plan for COVID-19 Eventuality

As the corona virus continues to spread across the globe, the Ministry of Health held another press conference this afternoon in Belmopan where it introduced a plan of action to address a potential outbreak of COVID-19, or coronavirus, in Belize. While there are confirmed cases in neighbouring Mexico, local health officials have put together measures to effectively deal with an eventuality.  Minister of Health Pablo Marin informed that at today’s Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Dean Barrow approved a budget of almost one million dollars to be earmarked to combat coronavirus when it reaches the country. At least two of the major private hospitals have also joined forces with government to provide isolation quarters in the event of an outbreak.

“The information that you should be listening to is from the Ministry of Health, the Director of Health Services and the Press Office.  For your information, today we had Cabinet meeting and the Prime Minister agreed for a budget right now for the situation with the virus of nearly nine hundred thousand, nearly a million [dollars].  We have already been spending money from the Ministry of Health and I think that is something that we know will come to us anytime soon.  We have, I think, four cases in Mexico.  We have Dominican Republic, we have in Brazil.  We are lucky enough that in Central America nothing has occurred as yet, but looking at the virus it will come anytime.  We’re asking the public to listen also to the WHO and to PAHO and one of the things that we can see is that eighty percent of the cases do not need any hospitalization and also, we want you all to know that a lot of people won’t show the symptoms. One of my main objective here is to give thanks to the Social Security Board for helping us in this preparation.  Mr. Sherrod who is the owner of billboard frames around the country and he has mentioned to us that we can use some of it without any cost, for us to put our advertisement there.  Two private hospitals have already reached out to us, that is Medical Associates and Northern Medical Plaza that will be having their own place, isolating areas.  U.B., for the education sessions and also the Belize Estate Group of Companies for reaching out also.”
