A 911 call just after nine o’clock on Saturday night led San Ignacio police to Tia Kong Supermarket on Joseph Andrews Drive. Shots were fired minutes before their arrival and three persons were injured. Two, however, were gravely injured and were rushed to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where they died a few minutes later while receiving treatment. The victims are thirty-two year old security officer Shann Vasquez and thirty-two year old Marva Rivero.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

ACP Joseph Myvett

“What the police know so far is that both persons were employees of a super market. The security guard being the security guard. They had recently closed the establishment just around nine p.m. for which one Richard Rivera is also the manager and he had his white in color Toyota car parked outside.”

As ACP Joseph Myvett explained the couple Richard and Marva along with Vasquez were walking away the front entrance of the store when the shooter pounced.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“They were approached by a dark skinned male person who fired on the security injuring him and in the process whilst Miss Marva was getting into the vehicle she was also fired upon.”

Vasquez was shot in his chest, arm and grazed in his jaw. Marva received gunshots wounds to her breast, shoulder, jaw and throat. For the Rivera and Vasquez family, the circumstances leading to their loved ones’ demise has left them in shock and disbelief.

Carmela Cain, Mother of Shann Vasquez

“I just felt my whole body, everything just fall out. I just felt like my entire body was shaking. I started to cry because this is the first time that something like this happened to me.”

Reporter

“Did he ever mention that he had any beef, any enemies or anything that was troubling him recently?”

Carmela Cain

“No he did not. Never. I ask the question why. What has my son done to you? Why did you kill him? I ask myself that question because I know Shann. My son is a loving person and he has a lot of respect.”

Voice of Jasmine Cal, Sister in law of Marva Rivera

“We are trying to figure out. We don’t know why somebody would have done something lIke that because Marva was a very good person.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Do you believe that she was the target, or was it Richard or the security officer?”

Voice of Jasmine Cal

“I don’t have an idea. I don’t know but it cannot be her because she is not a person who gets in with anybody. She is always laughing. She is always having fun. I don’t think it was her who they went for.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Did she every tell you that she had enemies or anyone who was after her, received any threats?”

Voice of Jasmine Cal

“No. Nothing. Everybody liked her. They liked hanging with her. She doesn’t have any problem out there.”

While a motive has not been established, investigators are ruling out that robbery was on the killer’s mind.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“One because, the deceased security guard was armed with a firearm and that was found on him after the incident.”

Reporter

“Was this a case of robber at the store as what was being reported?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No, it was not. The store was already close and it was a few feet away walking towards the vehicle when the incident occurred.”

Reporter

“Do we know if the security was a target, or the main target in this incident?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“We are not sure, we are trying to see where the investigation will lead to in relation to this.”

After reviewing security footage and speaking to witnesses, investigators detained one man for the double murder.

Reporter

“The person that is detained does he have any sort of connection to this store or to these persons?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“None to the store and at this point in time as I said the investigation is in its early stages so we are looking at several leads. A number of shots were fired at those two persons and I believe a few shots were fired at the vehicle as the vehicle immediately sped off. Her husband immediately sped off when he realized was shot then he transported her also to the hospital.”

The person detained is said to be a Belize Defence Force Solder. At the scene, police recovered five nine millimetre expended shells. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo
