Three persons injured in a hit and run

ACP Joseph Myvett

There was a hit and run traffic accident on Sunday evening on the Hummingbird Highway in Belmopan, and it left three persons injured. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, police are looking for him. A.C.P. Joseph Myvett shared the details at today’s Police press briefing in Belmopan.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National  CIB

“Sometime shortly after 5:30 pm, Belmopan Police were called to an area on the Hummingbird Highway in the vicinity of the FFB Stadium where upon their arrival they observed a beige in colour Toyota Tacoma overturned on the highway and they also observed three persons with injuries – being Raphael Herrera, 36, of a Belmopan address; Hugo Marroquin, 56, also of a Belmopan address; and Ruperto Herrera, 66, also of a Belmopan address.  What was reported to the Police is that the vehicle was north-bound, being driven by one Luis Matu, who is wanted by Police at this time.  It is apparent that he was north-bound and he lost control of the vehicle in that area and in order not to run into a big drain on the side, he swerved back to the left, which caused the vehicle to overturn.  He then fled the scene and he’s being sought by Police in relation to this investigation. Which we do believe that alcohol was a contributing factor.”

“Do we know if Matu has any relation to persons that received injuries in the accident?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No, not at this time. We do not know.”

Reporter

“But they were travelling together?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes, we do know that two of those persons were in the pan of the pick-up and they were flung from the vehicle when it overturned.”
