U.D.P. Chairman Describes Upcoming National Party Council

Michael Peyrefitte

The United Democratic Party is hosting another National Party Council meeting this Saturday, the second in less than a month, to decide on a timeline during which interested candidates can tender their names for leadership of the U.D.P.   Since former Minister of National Security John Saldivar has resigned from Cabinet and was removed as the leader-elect for the party, the governing party has been scrambling to find a successor for outgoing party leader Dean Barrow.  Party Chairman Mike Peyrefitte describes what the repeat process will entail.

Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, United Democratic Party

“This Saturday’s NPC for the party is being, you know, it’s overblown, what’s going to happen.  It’s not going to be a monumental event on Saturday.  All we’ll be doing is meeting as a National Party Council and at that party council we will set a time limit within which those who are in vying for the leadership of the party can submit their names to say that “Yes, I want to be the leader of the United Democratic Party” and then after that to set another or another timeline by which we must have the convention to select that leader.  Now if more than one people submit their names by the time that deadline comes around then you will have a contested convention.  If only one person were to submit their name then you have, you know, like an endorsement convention.  But we don’t know what will happen between the period of time that we set between Saturday and the deadline for nomination.  We don’t know what will happen.  You hear several names and Honorable Figueroa is one of them.  We don’t know if the Honorable John Saldivar or Minister Faber will submit their names again.  We don’t know that, but only time will tell that and we’ll have to wait and see who will submit their names to be the new leader.”
