Santa Cruz Farmers Up in Arms…

Farmers in the villages of Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Roman in the south are up in arms. Villagers, who rely on the land to provide for their families through subsistence farming, say that a company is making moves to acquire two thousand acres of land in the area. Santa Cruz chairman Vincent Scott, says that more than thirty farmers have been cultivating a portion of that land and if the company is allowed to purchase the land, the farmer’s livelihoods will be put at risk. Scott has been calling on the relevant authorities to consult with the village council, but that has fallen on deaf ears.  Scott says that the farmers have had enough and are planning to take action.

On the Phone: Vincent Scott, Chairman, Santa Cruz Village

“I did some investigation, trying to find out what was happening and at the end of the day we found out that they were giving something close to two thousand acres that this windmill company was applying for. The farmers were very concerned because they have investment in the area. They plant their products and they use it to take care for their families. So they came to me and ask me to try to see what we can do about it. Nobody came to us and told us anything. Everything that we heard is what we tried to investigate. Going back to the land department, then I found out and got  a paper stating that this guy has already applied and now everybody is wondering what will happen to their investment.”
