Jason Canto remanded for another firearm charge

Story PictureJason Canto was in court on Tuesday, jointly charged with his father, Mario and mother, Lovinia for keeping an unlicensed nine millimetre pistol that his father subsequently claimed ownership of. Twenty-six year old Jason, along with both of his parents, would have been remanded in custody but the charge against him and his mother were withdrawn at the direction of the D.P.P. and only the father is now behind bars. But that was not the end for Jason as he was remanded for yet another firearm charge, Keeping a Greater Amount of Ammunition than Specified in his License. Jason’s attorney, Michael Peyrefitte, told the court that today’s charges were of the same nature as the one dismissed yesterday and to bring the charge again would amount to “double jeopardy”. But the D.P.P., Cheryl-Lynn Branker-Taitt, appeared for the prosecution and argued that the charges are in fact different. In the end Magistrate Edd Usher ruled that Jason is to be remanded until May thirteenth. The charges are as a result of a search of the Cantos’ home where police found a point thirty-eight revolver with one hundred and twelve rounds of ammunition that was licensed to Jason. The search also unearthed an unlicensed nine millimetre pistol, for which the entire family was initially charged.
