HIVOS Intl grants $1 million to N.G.O.’s

Story PictureIt may sound like plenty money, but a one million dollar grant will be shared by six organizations and will be spread over the next three years. The Dutch funding agency, HIVOS International, has traditionally been supporting the Alliance Against AIDS, Haven House, the Toledo Maya Women’s Council, the Toledo Cacao Growers Association and WIN-Belize Secretariat for many years. But the recession is hitting everyone’s pocket and funds are drying up. So the six N.G.O.’s have collaborated on a joint project to avoid losing HIVOS as a source of funding. The project, entitled “Promoting Social Change in Belize through Concerted Civil Society Actions”, will be funded with the million Belize dollars, to be disbursed between the years 2009 to 2011. News Five spoke to the executive director of WIN-Belize, Carolyn Reynolds, to find out what the funds will be used for.

Carolyn Reynolds, Executive Director, WIN-Belize
“Well, most of it is really looking at gender-based violence, looking at gender and HIV/AIDS. And so these groups work with women, the HIV/AIDS, with the Alliance Against AIDS is looking at women, how we can empower women who have been affected by HIV/AIDS and also to see how we can work together as agencies and to strengthen that networking and also to help us to attract new funds. HIVOS has looked at what are the needs of different countries within the region and Belize is not a priority area right now but for them to stay in Belize that was one of the criteria, that we develop this project together and that we would be able to get funds. Otherwise, some of the agencies would not have been able to receive funds from HIVOS.”

“Alright, the release lists one lump sum amount. How will that be divided? How will you decide who gets how much?”

Carolyn Reynolds
“It will be over a period of time. So each year the funds will be less. So even though it, like I said, it looks like a big amount one million dollars, when you look at the six agencies and the work we are involved in then it’s not much. But like I said before, some of the agencies have been doing the program before and because of the need like looking at HIV/AIDS, we need to do much more on HIV/AIDS and so they will be getting a bigger portion of the funds. And for those in gender, that is dwindling away, won’t be getting as much.”

WIN-Belize has been selected to serve as the overall project administrator.
