Easter treats galore at all the city stores

Story PictureIt’s the time of year for Easter bunnies, chocolates and other goodies. And like previous years, they are going like hot cross buns for Good Friday. News Five went looking today for the choices that will suit your pocket and make both the young and the not so young happy at heart.

The shelves that we visited were stacked with a variety of Easter candies and chocolate treats, regular chocolates, special chocolates, Easter baskets…you name it – it was there. But the stocks left are also going as fast as Easter is coming.

Alma Martin, Asst. Mgr., Save-U Supermarket
“We had a lot of jelly beans, Easter eggs, chocolates, everything you can think about, the special baskets with the special characters and so forth, very good items.”

Marion Ali
“And those are gone.”

Alma Martin
“They’re finished, everything finished from early this year. People were doing a lot of early shopping it seems.”

According to Assistant Manager of Save U Supermarket, Alma Martin, there have also been some creative products.

Marion Ali
“I see you have something unique too, the first time I’ve seen a cross made out of chocolate.”

Alma Martin
“Oh yes, this is an Easter yearly tradition for us to bring in this kind of thing. We have the bible, the hands folded in prayer, you know we several cute little things like that. The people that we get our variety from have been making different types of chocolates with different flavors, different flavour combinations, different colors, and every year we try to get the newer stuff to keep everything fresh and cute. This is one of the newest items being made by the Hershey Company. It’s just being advertised on international TV and we already have it here. Here we also have this which we have never seen really here, the Neapolitan Chocolate combination in an egg. They’re really cute, very delicious, I’ve had both of them and I know they’re good.”

On the other side of town at Brodies Albert Street branch, there are some last minute specials.

Marco Villanueva, Asst. Mgr., Brodies Downtown branch
“We have Easter baskets, the Easter candies, we have couple in store specials, we have some Cadbury chocolates, if you buy one of the two-forty grams you get one of the smaller one attached to it for free. Tomorrow, I must mention, that Easter chocolates and the baskets we’re gonna have special prices, boiling down to the deadline, we’re gonna put a twenty percent discount on them, noh so if you haven’t gotten any basket for your sweets yet, you come by tomorrow and we’ll have those on special.”

Marion Ali
“What selling the most right now?”

Marco Villanueva
“The Easter chocolate. The different character chocolate, the eggs, stuff like that. The baskets have been selling because this morning the shelves were filled and if you notice now a couple of them are already empty.”

Marco Villanueva who manages Brodies downtown says they also have non-perishable gifts you can purchase if you’re not looking for sweets.

Marco Villanueva
“We have our wine collection or liquor collection. We have different items that you can buy over at our department store for your love ones, if you want, noh. We have some in stores specials, some of them—this weekend we had up to fifty percent off. Some of the items are selected but we still have special discounted prices over that side too. I guess it has to be to your liking noh, what you find unique because you might find something unique, well I might think that, well that’s something regular to me, yoh know.”

But while business has been good for those in sweets and chocolate delights, Albert Mendez, who runs a floral shop in the Commercial Centre, says Easter is usually rough for him.

Albert Mendez, Astar Limited
“Easter really isn’t a good time for us, right. We’ll be doing a few bouquets for some churches but what has happened in Belize is that it appears that Easter is n o longer a very religious event. Most people are heading out to the cayes and are more into shopping for other stuff like bikinis and shorts and that sort of thing. I mean Easter baskets sell right and we noh really do Easter basket. Other than Easter basket, it’s a parting time right now for people. Everybody is heading out for the weekend for the cayes and soh.”

Marion Ali
“So are you considering maybe venturing into that avenue? Maybe creating Easter baskets?”

Albert Mendez
“Well, really right now, so many people doing Easter basket it doesn’t make any sense. The business is spread out very thinly. You have all the big supermarkets and many other stores are doing it, right, so we noh really get into it. Easter is actually our slowest time; our best times are like Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.”

Meanwhile if you’re in the decorating mood, over at Celebrations Store on Queen Street we found just what you might be looking for to dress up your house this Easter. Reporting for News Five, Marion Ali.

Shoppers are advised that Save-U Supermarket and Brodies will have special opening hours this holiday. Save-U will be open its regular hours on Holy Thursday but will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. On Holy Saturday and Easter Monday it will open from eight until two. Meanwhile, Brodies downtown will close on Thursday at four but its Northern branch will open on Holy Saturday and Easter Monday.
