PM Barrow’s Final Keynote Address at NPC

Dean Barrow

With the election of a new leader, Prime Minister Dean Barrow will be demitting office, as when, a date is not known.  In his final address before a massive gathering of U.D.P. supporters at the Civic, Barrow spoke about his lengthy career as politician.  His vocation spans almost forty years since his foray into electoral politics in 1983.  He also took the opportunity to do some chest beating as he outlined a series of consecutive victories at the polls for the United Democratic.  While his keynote address was not as spirited as past speeches he has delivered, PM Barrow was in fine fettle.

Dean Barrow, Party Leader, U.D.P.

“This, after all, is the last time I shall be addressing a U.D.P. national convention.  Naturally, that is a cause for some personal regret.  I have been involved with this party at the electoral level since 1983 and now I bring to a close a life in politics, a life in the U.D.P. that has spanned almost four decades.  On the other hand, it has been the greatest privilege of my existence to have served the United Democratic Party and Belize and to have been leader for two decades was a joy beyond compare.  I therefore thank all of you for the complete support that you have given me throughout.  Your loyalty has been constant in good times and in bad and we experienced both.  It was a rough ten years in opposition, but the good far outweighed the bad and the memory of our trials in the wilderness was all but eliminated by our subsequent amazing successes, by our political dominance thereafter that proved to be unmatched in the history of independent Belize.  Stop and think about it for a moment, since 2003 when we won that Cayo South bye-election, the United Democratic Party has remained unbeaten at any level in any election in Belize and the high point of that record is of course the unprecedented achievement of becoming the only consecutive three-term government in the modern political era.”
