G.O.B. Bans Travellers Who Recently Visited China

A number of countries have imposed a travel ban and over the weekend, Belize did the same putting in place a travel ban for travellers who recently visited China, was imposed. As you know, the death toll caused by the coronavirus has been growing as the virus continues to contaminate person to person and on Saturday, a flight with Chinese nationals caused a stir. According to a release from G.O.B., “given the recent situations with travel history that have been documented upon arrival at the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport and other points of entry, both the Ministries of Health and Immigration are hereby directing that all travellers who have been in China within fourteen days immediately prior to arrival in Belize be denied entry.” The release ends by saying that this directive is an overall measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus to Belize. On Open Your Eyes this morning, Internist Doctor Fernando Cuellar says that addressing the concern should be taken as a learning experience.

“China response to it has been, I think, commendable. Of course you get your conspiracy theories that they noh di report all that they should and blah, blah, blah. But you can see efforts being made to contain it; they noh wha wait until wah year pass and then say this dah wah really bad virus and then the percentage in the thousands and so forth. And this won’t be the last and this is one of the points that I want to make today. So as a country, we should learn from this. And make Ministry of Health and government noh ketch feelings if anybody criticise them, but use it as an exercise and noh stop deh. I woulda say every three years; we have an exercise even though we noh have a epidemic, but a state of readiness. Make sure that yo show the Belizean people wi semi-prepared, wi half prepared. We woulda neva be fully prepared because even the richest countries ina di world can’t be fully prepared, but some level of readiness. But noh just say it, but show it. Listen we got this warehouse with so much hazmat suits, we got so much ventilators. We done know weh we wah put these people. We done know that dehn gwen perhaps dah B.D.F. camp and we done know that dehn could set up wah big tent and dehn kinda thing. And yo could see the confusion weh happen over the weekend. I mean miscommunication about who wah flag di people dehn—if dah immigration or the American Airlines. But clearly it neva gone smooth so let’s learn from it.”
