Cuba Celebrates the Historic Anniversaries of Revolution and Relations with Belize

The Embassy of Cuba in Belize celebrated two historic events over the weekend: the anniversary of its revolution and the anniversary of relations with Belize. Education and health have been two major pillars of success for the Cuban revolution. Cuban doctors and nurses have been deployed across the world, including Belize and local students continue to benefit from scholarship opportunities. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody with a report.

Cuba celebrated the sixty-first anniversary of its Revolution, which was led by Comandante Fidel Castro against the dictatorship of President Fulgencio Batista in January of 1959. In Belize, a ceremony was held at the Museum on Belize to commemorate the occasion. Cuban Ambassador to Belize, Lissette Perez Perez says January first, 1959 is recognized as the day when Cuba received its real independence.

“The morality with which the Cuban revolution and its performance began at the very beginning was remarkable. Cuban granted a universal health system and high professionalism and research which has allowed us to take medical care to the most out of the way corners of the country and provide assistance to more than sixty countries around the world. Cuba produces the vaccines to inoculate a lot of diseases, almost fifteen diseases, for each child in our country. The nation has an exceptional and modern biotechnology industry and has developed unique medicine and vaccines. The Cubans are very proud of the society we have built, which empowers the people. We continue believing that people well educated, with health, jobs and spiritual options like culture and sports are very resilient, who continue growing us despite any kind of adversities.”

The event was also an occasion to celebrate the twenty-five anniversary of bilateral relations between Cuba and Belize. There are a number of programmes with Cuba; Belizeans have benefited from education opportunities and many Cuban nurses are working in the health sector across the country.

“At the international arena, we have been characterized by solidarity missions. This began in 1963 in Africa and Latin America; later in the Caribbean and the other parts of world by assisting people in health, educational and other needs. Our medical personnel, teachers, sports instructors, technicians and advisors are serving in hundred of countries. Millions of people have been aiding in countries hit by natural disasters.”

The event included the launch of an exhibit, “Cuba Belize at Twenty-Five,” which featured various pieces by Belizean and Cuban artists; that exhibit is currently open to the public. In 2019, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the embassy and the National Institute of Culture and History to promote cultural exchange between both countries.

“Last year, NICH and El Centro de Estudios Martillano, through the Embassy of Cuba in Belize, agreed to work together through research culture and history. At that event, Professor Pedro Pablo Rodriguez was representing the Jose Martin Institute and at this event, we are honoured to have Senor Falco. This of course is our recent interaction with Cuba, but our relationship extends way back to when members of the Belize Dance Company did training in Cuba. And a little research into the history of NICH itself shows that the Houses of Culture are modelled after the Casas de Cultura de Cuba.”
