Migrant Caravan from Honduras Makes Way into Mexico

A group of about one thousand migrants from Honduras and elsewhere from Central America have made their way into Mexico after travelling for several days through neighbouring Guatemala. The migrants are fleeing their country for various reasons and are making their way to the United States. The caravan was viewed as a threat and the National Security Council convened a meeting to determine a plan of action should the migrants reach Belize. Elton Bennett, the Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard, was part of the team that decided on the course of action if the migrants reached the Belizean border.

“We met at national security Wednesday of last week with the sole purpose of looking at the migrant flow through Central America. We did receive information on a large group leaving Honduras and passing through Guatemala and passing northern Guatemala or probably passing through Belize with the intent of transiting Mexico to get to Untied States.  We were back and forth and we came to a conclusion on how we will approach the situation. Whilst we have never had any caravan passing through Belize, we thought it was necessary as a government to really put out our position and that position to the operators was very clear that the Government of Belize policy was that we would not facilitate any movement of mass migration through Belize. As a matter of fact, we identify that move as a possible security risk to Belize. So in a sense the national security is taking the lead in this. The whole situation has become securitized in the sense that we would use extraordinary security means to ensure that we demonstrate the government’s policy that we would not accept any migrants in Belize.”
