BPD gifts bikes to southside foundation!

The Commissioner of Police gifted ten bikes from its auction stock pile to a budding foundation on the southside called Charlie Burton Park Foundation. The foundation is being led by resident in the Gibnut and Antelope Streets area, G Michael Reid. Reid, and a couple other people in the neighbourhood, transformed a bush lot into a welcoming park for the children and youth who reside in the area. They have since expanded their work to an after school programme, provided scholarships, as well as some meals for the children. Reid says that some of the students would walk to school – some at great distance – and so he reached out to the Commissioner to try to buy some of the bikes – well, the ComPol responded not with a price – but a free price tag for ten bikes. This Commissioner Chester Williams handed over the bikes to the students. Here’s more from that event.

“I said to Mr. G Mike, instead of you purchasing these bicycles, I am going to donate ten of them to you so that they can be given to these children so that they can use it as a means of transportation to school. So, I ensured that the bikes that are being donated to these kids today are ready for ride. I think a couple of them the tyres may be flat and so it is just a matter of pumping and it will be ready to go. I think that the bikes go a long way for these children and it is a part of the continued project that we have in the Gibnut Street area. The park has been going and I must stay thanks to Mr Reid for his continued effort to ensure that the park is being used by the youth in the area. I must say that so far the Antelope-Gibnut Street area has been transformed. You all would recall couple months back that it was a hot area that shots were being fire  but sine we put that park there, the children and the youth have used the park in a product manner, we have seen that the criminal activities there have declined significantly.”

“We select guys on a merit basis. We evaluate their report cards and how they are doing at home and in school. In fact, we had fourteen that qualified and we have ten bikes so we have to figure out who gets what. I did approach the Commissioner and to his credit, he called me back and said you nuh have to buy them because I wah give you some and so I have to say thanks to Commissioner.”

“It is important to create safe spaces and I think these children look at this environment as a safe space. We have been there for four years and I am happy to hear the commissioner say that the crimes have gone down drastically. The residents of the area will tell you that they feel safer; the break ins are not happening as they used to; the killings are not in the area like it used to be; so there has been a vast improvement. We try to put a foundation where these kids can build a positive life on and try to transfer to them all the principles that will make them into good citizens as opposed to a scourge on the community.”
