Safety tips for Xmas Shoppers

Chester Williams

The holidays are upon us – with just twelve more days to go before Christmas, the shopping has started and this weekend going into next week – there will be a lot of people moving around and spending money. But during this time, the criminals, particularly thieves, are out and about. Commissioner Williams says that the Police Department, through its Special Patrol Unit, is already executing their policing strategies leading up to the holidays. As we head into the weekend, Commissioner Williams shares some tips that can help keep you and your items safe.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“At this time of the year it is a festive time and people are preparing for the holidays and we have a responsibility to ensure their safety. So, we have a strategy in place to make our citizens shop in a safe environment as we can. And so we try to advise people that not just because the police are out there mean that you won’t take your own security measures to avoid becoming the victim of crime. So, we advise you not to walk around with large quantities of cash. If you go to the ATM do not walk out with your cash in your hand and try to take someone with you. Do not park your vehicle in a dark area where you have to walk to your vehicle after shopping. Do not walk around with jewelleries displayed. That again will attract persons to you. Do not park your vehicle with expensive items on the seat or visible, again, that will attract thieves to your vehicle. These are things that you can do to help prevent you from becoming a victim of a crime.”
