Home Invasions in Belama on the Rise?

Armed thieves, believed to be residents of St. Martin’s area of Belize City, are said to be operating in a ring that has been involved in a number of aggravated burglaries in the Belama Phase One community.  On Monday afternoon, a pair of armed men entered a home on Samuel Haynes Street where they encountered Argenize Carballo, a maintenance man, Nubia Banos, a housekeeper, and a seventeen-year-old female minor. The masked men then bound both female occupants before ransacking the property. Upon exiting the house they came face to face with Caballero. He too was tied up before they made good their escape.  This morning, Superintendent Alejandro Cowo fielded a few questions on the incident.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C. C.I.B., Eastern Division

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“On Monday, December ninth, at about 2:30, police were called to Samuel Haynes Street in the Belama Phase One area where they spoke to a female who was also in the company of three other persons.  They reported to the police that whilst they were inside of the house two male persons entered the building.  One of them was armed with a firearm and as a result all of them were tied up and taken to a room.  Thereafter, the room was ransacked and stolen was an amount of cash, jewelleries and liquor from the said house.  Police, as a result, conducted an investigation and they conducted a search across the river that leads to the Martin’s area where they recovered some liquor and other small items that were reported in that burglary.”

“Is it believed that the perpetrators of this crime used the river as a way to transit to where the victims were asleep?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, we do believe that they used the river to come from that side of the Martin’s area into the Belama area and they went back the same way.”

Reporter

“Sir, was there any suggestion that maybe these culprits had prior information that valuables were at this house?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“That is something that we are looking at, information that we had received earlier and we are working on that likewise.”

Reporter

“Were there any shots fired sir…”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, we were told that while the guys were fleeing a person who was in the nearby area fired a shot at them.”
