Residents Say They Are Feeling the Pinch in their Pockets

Elsira Richardson

As we reported, a contraction in economic activity in the previous two quarters is spelling bad news.  As the private sector crunches the numbers, a News Five crew took to the streets to get a pulse of the people on the ground.  From what we were able to gather, residents are feeling the pinch where it hurts, in their pockets.  Christmas is looking lean, they say that the cost of living is high and they are trying to survive. Here is a sample of what they had to say:

Elsira Richardson, Belize City Resident

“I think everything. Everything dah wah struggle and cost a living right now high. So of course it wah be bills. As yo get yo pay, yo have to pay bills and thing. Sometimes before yo even get yo pay, ih done schedule out.”

Duane Moody

“Are things affordable in this day and age in Belize?”

Dawna Carr

“We hear people saying dehn just di work fi pay bills. What is your situation like?”

Dawna Carr

“Well my situation is not too bad. But it is; a lot of families are working just to pay bills and taking care of their kids so Christmas might be a little hectic this year.”

“It’s kinda hard right and it depends on where yo come from fi stretch yo dollar because yo know these times, people noh have job and if yo do have a lee job, yo still di try see how yo stretch it. Well I think if you spend yo money right yah with the lee bit weh yo make and yo stretch it and go around to the different stores, they do have some things that you can afford instead of going to Chetumal or dah Melchor.”

Kadisha Baptist

Kadisha Baptist, Belize City Resident

“Well it kinda affordable. It depends on the job weh yo have, but it is expensive especially if yo have kids and yo have to pay rent, pay light and everything. It very costly especially if yon oh have a good job.”

Duane Moody

“So yo think that people just di live from…”

Kadisha Baptist

“From pay check to pay check. Especially with gas; gas is high. Light bill, very high as well too.”

Meredith Andrews

Meredith Andrews, Belize City Resident

“Not so affordable. Like the harder yo try survive….the more yo try survive, the harder the strive; like everyday something go up. Like for me, I sell food. I sell breakfast and lunch, but the area weh I deh, I just have to sell fi suit the neighbourhood weh I deh.”
