“Min-Min” brutally killed in Dangriga!

Jasmin Garcia

A woman is one of two murder victims of the weekend. In Dangriga, the community is stunned at the shocking killing of a thirty-six-year old woman who was killed and dumped in the sea where her body was found early Sunday morning. The well-known resident Jasmin Garcia, known around Dangriga as “Min-Min or Minaz,” was found with injuries to the head and neck. Her body was semi nude. Her family says that there was a threat to her life some time ago but it is hard to tell who did it because she had contact with too many people. Today, they are trying to come to terms with the cold-blooded murder. Reporter Andrea Polanco has the story.

Voice of:  Margaret Garcia McKenzie, Mother of the deceased

“When they called me and they told me that they found a body and they said that it is Jasmin, I couldn’t do anything, anymore. I could have done was cry.”

It’s a tragedy that Margaret Garcia McKenzie wasn’t expecting. Her eldest child, thirty-six-year-old Jasmin Garcia, brutally murdered in her hometown. Sometime around seven on Sunday morning, Garcia’s half naked body – dressed in only her underwear – was retrieved from the sea near the pier off Front Street in Dangriga. It’s news Garcia’s only child is still processing – the last time she saw her mom was almost six months ago:

Voice of: Sherima Tillett, Daughter of the deceased

“That’s the thing that hurt me. I haven’t seen my mom from June. [Crying] From June – that was the last time I saw my mom. I remember the last time I saw my mom – that was  before my grand mom took her to Dangriga- I told her I love you mom and she said I love you more.”

Jasmin Garcia, better known as “Min-Min” or “Minaz” lived alone in another part of town and would visit her immediate family from time to time in the Wagierale area. The last time her mom and sisters saw her was a week ago.  A relative told us that Garcia spotted around town socializing on Friday night. Another friend reported that Garcia stopped by her house on Saturday night but they didn’t get a chance to talk. A couple hours later, Garcia was found dead with massive injuries to the face and neck. She was killed sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Voice of: Colisha Francisco, Sister of the deceased

“At the time when my ma gone on the scene, she was naked. My ma said she had a deep chop behind her head and it was like they lashed her out with something big and heavy because it seemed like her neck bruk and all.”

Garcia was well-known in the town. She was friendly and kind. But her family says that she lived a fast life, one where she’d spend most of her time on the streets of Dangriga. So, it is hard for the family to tell who all the people are that she associated with or may have come in contact with. She was always out late at night, partying, dancing or hanging out with friends and it is during one of those nights out sometime last year that she made enemy with a man. The family says that man had threatened her life:

Voice of: Sherice Flores, Sister of the deceased

“All weh deh come and tell me that deh find wah body dah Dangriga and they suspect that it is my sister. Instantly my mind run pahn she because we know the life that she mi the live. I wouldn’t say she was an angel because for everybody who mi know Min-Min, Minaz dah mi love. Everybody weh you could talk to could attest to that. Despite of her lifestyle, it is just shocking the way how deh kill ah and for what reason, we nuh know. What are some of the activities….ih had problem with.”

Voice of: Colisha Francisco

“When she mi talk about it, the person she had problem with dah mi wah male person but I nuh know the individual so I can’t say. She used to come multiple times the say that this person the threaten her life and she made reports to the police as well.”

Andrea Polanco

“And she didn’t say why this person was threatening her?”

Voice of: Colisha Francisco

“No, ma’am. I believe that they got into a fight.”

And according to the family, Garcia didn’t report any recent dispute. They say she kept most of her problems to herself. While she spent a lot of time in the streets, residents say that Jasmin Garcia was harmless. It’s brutal end she didn’t deserve.

Voice of: Margaret Garcia McKenzie

“Jasmin usually heng out, when I tell you heng out, heng out because she dah somebody love her lee party and suh. I still nuh see why they would kill ah to that extent.”

Andrea Polanco

“As a mom, you used to worry about her being out there?”

Voice of: Margaret Garcia McKenzie

“All the time. Sometimes if I nuh see Jasmin, I would go in an area where she would usually hang out and so just so that I could see my baby. When I see her pass, when she know she deh on and suh, not even me she want to see.”
