Two Men Shot, One is Killed During PG Shooting Incident

Glenford Hines Junior

Further south in Punta Gorda, Glenford Hines Junior was killed on Sunday morning. The latest murder victim was on Prince Street where his family lives. He was outside his house when a gunman opened fire. The Hines family believes that the bullets were meant for another person who was walking by. That person, Albert Valentine, was injured in the shooting. The gunman fled the scene of the crime but police have detained a suspect. News Five’s Isani Cayetano was in Punta Gorda and files the following report.

An attempt on the life of a known criminal figure in Punta Gorda has resulted in the execution of another individual who, by all accounts, was innocent to the mess that twenty-four-year-old Albert Valentine has gotten himself into.  When a lone gunman appeared on Prince Street on Sunday night, thirty-six-year-old Glenford Hines Jr. was standing outside of his family home.  The shooter opened fire on his quarry, before turning his weapon on the bystander.

“I hear five shots and his mom came out and said, “Weh dat?”  And dehn mi feel dat da pop shot or bomb and I tell them, “Noh man, bomb sound different than that.”  And she come out cause she feel like da after ih son but ih seh dat da noh him.  Someone run through the yard and when we conscious, we never know that the guy he get shot too.”

When the shooting subsided, both men had been injured.  Hines, or Talla, as he is known by friends and family, had been shot below the right armpit and lower left back.  Despite an attempt to pursue the armed attacker, first responders could not catch up to him.  They then rushed Hines to the Punta Gorda Hospital where he expired shortly thereafter.

“We were trying to get him but he rode too fast and by the time we came back we saw my brother lying on the ground on his face.  He and his other brother were trying to help him but he was trying to fight but he was like choking.  And we tried to get him in the vehicle and by the time we reached the hospital the doctor said they were… and right there they pronounced him dead.”

Albert Valentine

Valentine, on the other hand, was also wounded in the lower left back and right wrist.  He managed to escape grave injury by running through the Hines’ property, before collapsing behind a residence on West Street.  He was discovered sometime later.

“The gunman rode off on a bicycle.  He had on a red cap and a grey looking shirt with a blue [shirt] underneath it.”

The alleged gunman was successful in evading his pursuers during the getaway, but has since been taken into custody by Punta Gorda police.  News Five understands that an individual, believed to be the shooter, was taken off a bus headed for Belize City in the early hours of this morning.  While they have not released a motive, speculation runs amok in this southern municipality.  The Hines family maintains, however, that their sibling was never the intended target of the deadly spray.

“He wasn’t the first one to be shot at that night, I would say, because he is here every night.  If they wanted to come and shoot him, they would have shot him a long time ago.  But to be honest and speaking from my heart, I do believe that it was the other person, the other victim, that was just passing by and I believe that they were trailing him for a little while and I believe [that] just at the time when he was passing our house that’s when the gunman decided to strike.  And the victim that is alive right now, he use to hang around here so he does know our yard and he knows this is a little shortcut as well, so he decided to try and run for his life through here, you know.”

Hines’ younger brother, Jamie, recalls his fallen brother as someone who was more than willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.  That’s what he was most known for.

“My brother was a good role model to society, a loving person.  He wasn’t in any gang or in any gang-related activities or anything like that and I think, like my brother said, they just shot him because probably the guy was barefaced and he didn’t want any witnesses, you know.  It was so sad mein.”
