Result of Post-mortem on Michael Cobo Inconclusive, but Who Killed Him?

Michael Cobo

The family of eighteen-year-old Michael Cobo from San Pedro is still reeling from his recent gruesome murder.  Late on Wednesday, Cobo’s mother identified his body after he had been missing for days.  The body was retrieved from the sea near the area of the Port of Belize in Belize City.  The eighteen-year-old had travelled to the city since last Friday.  The last time he was seen alive was in the Yarborough area and the last time his mother heard from him was also on Friday. Whoever killed him, tied his hands, wrapped him in a sheet, dumped him in the water and weighed him down.  While it is known he was once charged for murder, police say the motive for his killing is under investigation. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody.

A post-mortem exam conducted on the decomposing body of Michael Cobo was unable to determine the cause of death of the eighteen-year-old San Pedro resident. That’s the official details coming out of the Belize Police Department today, following the gruesome find around 10:10 on Wednesday morning near the Port of Belize Limited. Superintendent Alejandro Cowo says that the body was fastened with a sheet and weights attached.

Supt Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Almost half way of the peer and about fifty feet away from the pier, police saw the body of a male person floating face down in the sea. With the assistance of the Belize Coast Guard, they managed to retrieve the body and upon inspection of the body, it was noted that it was in an advanced state of decomposition. The body was wrapped in a sheet and also had some barb wire and cement blocks attached to the body. Later on in the day, the body was identified as a missing person, Michael Reyes Cobo, eighteen years old of San Mateo area, San Pedro Town. Sometime last night a post-mortem examination was conducted on that body where at the end of the post-mortem, the doctor was unable to determine the cause of death because of the advance state of decomposition.”

Cobo had been missing for almost a week, after he left his house in the San Mateo area of San Pedro to visit with friends in Belize City.  He was last seen alive in the Yarborough community on November twenty-ninth. That was also the last day his mother received a text from him. Margarita Chi says that by the following morning, he could not be reached via phone; she says the last message he sent to her was that he was waiting for his “boys.”

“I tell him don’t be on the street in Belize late because Belize is dangerous.  He said, “I’m not going to buy the burritos mom.  I am waiting for my boys, dah dehn gaan get it for me.”  I said, “Okay hijo” and he said what are you doing.  I said I am in bed I am going to take a nap right now.  That’s something I do every day.  So he continued to chat up with my husband di text up ‘til 6:36 in the evening.  I still remember because I was checking the text, my phone checking the what time he would call back and he never called.  I fell asleep on Saturday morning, I checked my phone and I said this “mother f*cker” This is my way with my kids and everybody in San Pedro knows that I talk like that with my kids.  I am a single mother for a lot of years and I’ve been mom and dad for them and dehn use to that.  So I tell my husband, “Dis mother f*cker noh text me yet” So I started to call him and text him and he don’t answer and I got frustrated because I know he’s not like that.”

Chi sensed that something was wrong, because Cobo was to return to San Pedro on November thirtieth. He never did and his brother then travelled to Belize City to look for him. But he could not be found and a missing person’s report was filed on Tuesday, one day before he was discovered dead.

“Ih bredda come look fi him at his friend’s house.  The friend said ih neva reach but it was a lie because my son called me and he told me that he was partying and I hear the music.  So my son stayed until Monday and Tuesday looking all around for his little brother and never found him.  So they returned yesterday home and we gaan put wahn report.  But before that, his older sister Miredi posted that her little brother went missing and so we started to look for him and we never find him.  We’re looking on the island with boat and we didn’t find him.  So today we went to the police station to put the report again to come to Belize because they told me I had to come to Belize.  But we passed to pick up some papers and my other son sent me a text telling me if I sih dehn find wahn body.”

Police say that Cobo was charged back in 2017 for a murder on the island, but they are still trying to establish a motive behind his killing.

Supt Alejandro Cowo

“He was charged in 2017 if I am not mistaken along with others for a murder in San Pedro.”

“Has it been determined with investigators who the victim as last seen with in the Yarborough area of the city?”

Supt Alejandro Cowo

“We know that he had mentioned to family members that he was coming to Belize City to meet with some friends in the Yarborough area, however the name of those friends we have not ascertained as yet.”
