Michael Cobo’s Lifeless Body is Found Floating near Port

Michael Cobo

A San Pedro family travelled to Belize City today for the difficult task of identifying a body. Reports spread quickly this morning that a badly decomposed body had been located in the sea not far from the Port of Belize. The Cobo family had reason to believe that one of their own, Michael Cobo, who has been missing for more than a week had met a horrible death and his body deposed of. The body was taken to Burrell Boom and at news time the family’s worst fears were confirmed. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

The badly decomposed body of a male person was discovered floating not too far away from the shoreline this morning in the vicinity of Port of Belize Limited.  The corpse, wrapped in a cover of some kind, was weighted down by what appears to be a concrete block.  The individual’s hands were also bound together.  Sometime after ten a.m. police responded to the port where a report of a partially submerged body had been called in.  While there has been no confirmation of an identity, it is believed that the remains are those of eighteen-year-old Michael Cobo who was last seen in the Yarborough area of Belize City on November twenty-ninth.  Accompanied by a coast guard vessel, police were able to bring the body to shore at the low berth section of the port facility.  News Five reached out to Cobo’s family earlier today and we were informed that they were coming in from San Pedro to see if the body that was found this morning is in fact that of their loved one.  The deceased, we are told has been transported to the Central American Health Science University where a post mortem examination will be conducted.

“So Friday, like I was saying before, he text me and he tell me, “Hi mom, what you doing?”  But he talked to me in Spanish because he speaks lone English, but I talk to him in Spanish because I like hear how he sound in his voice and he texted me, “Como estas Mami?”  So I tell him, “Stupido, I am okay and I am in bed”  And then I tell he what are you doing, and he said, “Esperando para mis burritos.”  So I tell him don’t be on the street in Belize late because Belize is dangerous.  He said, “I’m not going to buy the burritos mom.  I am waiting for my boys, dah dehn gaan get it for me.”  I said, “Okay hijo” and he said what are you doing.  I said I am in bed I am going to take a nap right now.  That’s something I do every day.  So he continued to chat up with my husband di text up ‘til 6:36 in the evening.  I still remember because I was checking the text, my phone checking the what time he would call back and he never called.  I fell asleep on Saturday morning, I checked my phone and I said this “mother f*cker” This is my way with my kids and everybody in San Pedro knows that I talk like that with my kids.  I am a single mother for a lot of years and I’ve been mom and dad for them and dehn use to that.  So I tell my husband, “Dis mother f*cker noh text me yet” So I started to call him and text him and he don’t answer and I got frustrated because I know he’s not like that.  He’s a person every hour he will text, “Que estas haciendo? What are you doing?  I love you mom.”  I would ask, “What are you doing?”  “I am right here chilling with the boys.”  And Saturday passed, Sunday.  My other son said, mom don’t worry, he will come back Sunday.  I said no, he told me Saturday.  Maybe he noh answer because ih phone gaan dead or ih phone noh good or something.  Ih party and ih forget fi text you.  So Sunday his big brother come looking for him because he saw that I was worried.  Ih bredda come look fi him at his friend’s house.  The friend said ih neva reach but it was a lie because my son called me and he told me that he was partying and I hear the music.  So my son stayed until Monday and Tuesday looking all around for his little brother and never found him.  So they returned yesterday home and we gaan put wahn report.  But before that, his older sister Miredi posed that her little brother went missing and so we started to look for him and we never find him.  We’re looking on the island with boat and we didn’t find him.  So today we went to the police station to put the report again to come to Belize because they told me I had to come to Belize.  But we passed to pick up some papers and my other son sent me a text telling me if I sih dehn find wahn body.”
