American Nurse is Stabbed to Death in Hopkins

Wendy Dardano

The month of December started in a painful way for three families who lost loved ones in violent and separate incidents.  We go first to southern Belize where an American nurse was killed in a most gruesome manner.   Fifty-year-old Wendy Dardano was well-known and liked in Hopkins where she moved to months ago. As she did in Dangriga, Darano worked at the clinic in the village.  Those who knew her say they detected signs of physical abuse in her relationship with her common-law-husband. It got ugly and ended violently.  On Saturday night she was killed, her body dumped in a garbage container and then concealed with garbage. Her much younger common-law has been held by the police. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Dr. Kenton Flowers, Medical Officer, Hopkins Satellite Clinic

“She was first working in the polyclinic in Dangriga; we are just a satellite of that main clinic. So she has been there for almost going a year now, at both locations. But here in Hopkins, she has been here going five months plus.”

She worked with the Hopkins Satellite Clinic for almost six months before her life was cut short in the wee hours of Saturday morning in Hopkins Village. Fifty-year-old Wendy Dardano was stabbed to death inside the lower flat of a concrete house in the village. Her body was then disposed of inside a garbage bin and concealed with trash.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Hopkins police were called by a concerned citizen who reported to them that she was calling Wendy Dardano, fifty years American national, cell phone and she was answered by a male person. Previous to that, she made several calls from earlier in the day which were again answered by a male person who gave her different accounts as to her whereabouts which caused her to get suspicious and as a result she called Hopkins Police who visited Miss Dardano’s house in Hopkins Village where upon arrival they encountered her common-law husband. As a result, a conversation was held with him and he was eventually detained. Police then went back to the area shortly thereafter where a search was conducted on the entire house and yard where later in a blue plastic drum in front of the yard, they discovered the apparent lifeless body of Miss Wendy Dardano inside the barrel.”

The staff over at the clinic is still in disbelief.

“From Saturday during the day, the police were requesting if I knew where the nurse was because some friends of hers were trying to locate her. I had no idea of her location and after that the police officers decided that they would put together a search party to look for her. I got a call from one of my co-workers; that was about six-thirty or seven in the evening, saying that they found the body of the nurse. It’s very disheartening news to hear something like that. From my account, she was a very nice person. Professionally, she was an excellent nurse; I got great comments from patients she had seen. So it is a great loss for the country for the public.”

Dardano had been stabbed once to the chest inside the house, allegedly by her boyfriend who is originally from Corozal Town. Close friends and co-workers of the deceased American national say that about three weeks ago, there were signs of physical abuse on Dardano, and even though she was advised to make a report to the police, she didn’t. It is believed that the twenty-eight-year-old prime suspect cleaned the house before it was processed by police.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“The scene was processed where she was observed with an apparent injury to the chest. Her common-law-husband at this point in time remains in police custody pending this investigation.  What we do know is that sometime after eleven p.m. on the previous night, they were both seen going to a shop within the village and they seemingly were at several other locations prior to that time.”

Andrea Polanco

“Does your investigation show a history of maybe domestic violence or dispute between this couple?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“There was none reported but yes it was brought to the police attention, but there was none reported to the police per say that any reported was logged in regards to that.”

News Five understands that a blood stained shirt as well as a knife was discovered by officers.  Duane Moody for News Five.
