3 Men are Arraigned for Water Taxi Explosion
Water taxis usually run to and from the mainland to the cayes without any incident. However, on May fifth, 2019, there was an explosion on board a water taxi, which was preparing to leave from Ocean Ferry located near the Swing Bridge in Belize City with passengers. The explosion left two minors dead and several passengers injured. The Belize Port Authority has brought charges against three individuals who appeared in court this morning. Ernesto Delgado, the boat captain, Charles Young, the manager of Ocean Ferry, and Miguel Calis, the manager of San Pedro Water Jet International were arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. Delgado was arraigned on a charge of causing the loss of life by negligence of Kimberly Melissa Guy and Yamiri Jasmin Guy. Charles Young was arraigned on a charge of attempting to send an unsafe vessel on a voyage. Miguel Calis was arraigned on a charge of causing an unsafe vessel to be sent out at sea. Attorney Darrell Bradley is prosecuting the case on behalf of the Belize Port Authority. The three individuals have retained separate attorneys.
