Belize’s Sugar Exportation to CARICOM Members States a Reality

Belize has finally been successful in getting its sugar into CARICOM for export. Trade Ministers of the Council for Trade and Economic Development in November agreed that Belize, and other sugar producing countries in CARICOM will be able to export plantation white sugar to member states. This is good news in particular for A.S.R./B.S.I. and Santander. A.S.R. says that presently over two-thirds of market demand in CARICOM is imported from outside the region, leaving sugar producers little choice than to export their own product on the global market at un-remunerative prices. Minister of State for Investment, Trade and Commerce Tracy Taeger-Panton says there was agreement on the establishment of a mechanism to monitor all regional sugar flows.

“We were able to gain market access for what we call consumption sugar and plantation white is critical to our negotiations at COTED. Most of the manufacturers in the region are accessing white sugar or plantation white sugar or refined sugar from other sources outside of CARICOM and we feel that we are producing at the quality, quantity and consistency that is required by CARICOM manufacturers and so we wanted to ensure that we have market access for sugars produced in this region, that is Belize, Guyana Jamaica and to a lesser extent Barbados and we were successful at that. That is a big win for Belize being the lead advocator but it is a big win for sugar producers all over the region.”
