Benque Free Zone Board Arbitrarily Increase Fees without Consultation

In early November, a protest broke out at the Benque Free Zone after the Board decided to institute an increase of fees. This was met with disagreement and a riot squad was deployed to quell things down. The additional fees were imposed on cigarettes but according to Minister of State for Investment, Trade and Commerce the matter has been resolved. The Minister says that the Board at the Benque Free Zone arbitrarily increased fees without consulting the government.

“The Government is the regulator. The management made a decision without consultation without the regulators. They had pushed back and they had to then take a step back and look at what they can and cannot do. Certainly, they can’t increase prices arbitrarily and so I understand that the matter has been resolved.”

“So the fee is no longer in place?”

“I believe that they were able to negotiate a fee structure that is convenient to their clients in the zone.”
