Belize Accelerates Digital Government Transformation

Mike Singh

A workshop was conducted today with senior public sector officials, municipalities, as well as private sector entities to discuss the implementation of the E-government policy.  In 2015, government endorsed the National E-government Policy in an effort to leverage the power of information and communications technology as a driver of economic and social development.  Mike Singh is an advisor to the Government of Belize through the Central Information Technology Office.

“You know our which I have said many times is Belize‘s moving towards transforming government to a platform upon which services can be delivered more efficiently, of course using internet technology.  That‘s the medium that people want, people want to interact with their government via their mobile devices, their computers.  They don‘t want to stand in lines, they want service when they need it and they want to make sure that government gives them what they want when they need it.  It‘s not a matter of you having to search for a service or standing in line to get it.  It should be available and served to you in a way that you would want to consume it.  So we‘ve embarked on this program which has been endorsed at the very highest level of Cabinet and today we have a specialist by the name of Mike Bracken who is one of the guys that actually started in 2011.  He‘s the one that led the transformation of the UK government from an analogue platform to a digital platform and some of the principles that they used which is really to focus on the user experience and to let that drive how you change, as opposed to us taking policy in trying to convert policy into an experience.  It‘s a different way of looking at and I think it‘s very positive because his team, Public Digital, is going to be helping the government and our team to be able to tool ourselves and to be able to fine tune our strategy to be able to deploy services a lot quicker.”
