1 Man is Charge for Murder of Zheng Liu

Joseph Vaccaro

The execution style murder of prominent businessman Zheng Liu continues to rock the Chinese community and the thousands who knew and liked one of the owners of the Eighty Eight Group of Companies on Central American Boulevard. Liu was called by cell phone on Friday night by an associate; he left the store and headed to the George Price Highway where he was shot at close range. Police would find his body on the highway and his vehicle in the Gungulung area. It is known that four men were detained; one of them was escorted to court this morning and charged for Liu’s murder.  But there were protestations from the mother of Joseph Vaccaro, who says that police have the wrong man. Here is News Five’s Duane Moody.

“He is scared and I want put on the record that my son noh kill no Chiney man because it take two finger to kill a louse. And the one weh call ahn out, dah di one supposed to deh in yah. Ih call ahn out to gone help tow a vehicle. Dehn dah cousin; ih mi deh ina ih bed. Deh live neighbouring. So why di police officer and the CIB dehn noh pick up the next person and do di right job weh dehn supposed to do. Two finger kill a louse, not one. So how my son alone will be facing a murder when he noh even know the Chiney man? So how ih get out there? Unu do unu job di right way. Do unu job the right way. Unu please, please, noh make ih go like that because dah wah black man against a Chiney man.”

Liu was shot at close range over the weekend near mile four on the George Price Highway. The details disclosed by police are that the twenty-eight-year-old Chinese businessman received a call that a vehicle he had imported had broken down on the highway. Liu picked up an associate and travelled to the area to assist, but he was executed and his body dumped on the side of the road. The killer and his accomplices, including Liu’s associate, escaped in Liu’s vehicle.

“In the process, he then picked up another male person who rode along with him to the area where they were met by two other persons and during that process, Mister Liu was apparently shot. Police did locate that in Belize City; the vehicle which he used to go to that area.”

“Was that in someone’s possession? Who had that vehicle?”

“Yes it was. I am not going to reveal that, but yes it was in someone’s possession.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are you able to say if that’s one of the persons detained?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes it is.”

Vaccaro is one of four men that were detained in connection with the murder. But during arraignment today, the accused told the court that he did not commit the crime. Vaccaro says did not get a copy of the facts on the case, even though he had given a statement to police saying that another person pulled the trigger on the night of November twenty-third. He claimed that he was in the back seat of Lui’s vehicle when it was intercepted by police in the Gungulung area of the city and he was caught at the scene.

Brendalee Vacario

“Three man dehn tell me more deh detain; dehn talk against yo son. So dah soh di system goh? Dehn talk against yo son and because dehn talk against yo son, yo son get charge fi that? Yo supposed to put two things together to make one. So I woulda want ask Miss D.P.P. to please look into my son file cause ih mi ready fi go do ih caution statement this morning. He tell me say, “Mommy, I wasn’t in the driver’s seat. When all of this gone down. I ready fi talk. I was scared, I fraid; I fraid fi dehn kill yo. So I ready fi talk now. I say, well we di get the attorney and yo gwen go talk the truth. But dehn di push round and dehn noh want the truth.”

Vaccaro was imprisoned for three years after he was accused of a 2014 murder in the west. It was found that he was wrongfully charged and another person was found guilty of the crime and sentenced. The family is suing for damages. His mother Brendalee believes that her son is being targeted and claims that his life has been threatened.

Brendalee Vacario

“They beat ahn, dehn pepper-spray ahn, dehn slap ahn up; dehn all kinda thing. Soh weh happen?  When di incident happen, first thing yo see pan the Facebook, my son face up against the Chiney man one. Dehn condemn my son right deh. Rumour di go round that Chiney man wah get my son kill back ah jail. Well make I tell them this. This black woman noh stand pan ten and a half fi no reason. I stand strong. And I will get to the bottom of anything.”
