Johnny Says It’s About Transparency and Accountability

John Briceño

The outcome of the challenge, according to Opposition Leader John Briceño, should set precedence for other jurisdictions within the region insofar as the expenditure of public funds.  He also explains why the People’s United Party proceeded with the claim, despite the notion that the P.U.P. may very well form the next government in 2020.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We cannot continue to do business as usual, that we have to be more accountable [for] the people’s money, we have to be more transparent and we have to use the people’s money more…  I think we have to be more careful how we spend their money.  The people in the Caribbean, especially here in Belize, are demanding more from their leaders and I am very pleased to be a part of this case.  I have every confidence in the work that our attorneys have done and we look forward to the judgment on the twenty-first of January next year.  So people may be asking, why are you doing this?  Do you want to tie your hand because many people believe that we will from the next government?  I think it is very important, not only for this government but for future governments to ensure that we work within the budget, that we work within the constitution, that we work within the law and that we should always be held accountable.”
