Vasquez Family Wants Answers

Nestor Vasquez Jr.

According to Jules Vasquez, the family hasn’t heard of further development in the case. He says that he has reached out the Director of Public Prosecution. Today, he told reporters that the way the criminal justice system works in Belize is regrettable, but that it is a dysfunctional mechanism that the family expected. Here’s what he had to say.

Jules Vasquez, Brother of Nestor Vasquez Jr.

“I am trying to bring pressure on the authorities to bring charges for murder, but from the legal process there isn’t anything we can do, we cannot originate charges on our own. So, we must wait for the DPP and I apply as much pressure as I can as we did with the police and those officers were recommended for dismissal.   The last time I spoke with the Commissioner, and this was months ago, the investigator was taking further orders from the DPP in terms of collecting statements. As I undersand it, there was an attempt to get statements from the people in adjoining cells because there were only two people in that cell. So, I can see how that could be a problem in bringing charges because there were no independent witnesses.”

“Mr. Vasquez, is it your understanding that the authorities are dragging their feet or are they just simply being extremely thorough to secure a prosecution?”

Jules Vasquez

“I think we all know that we have a dysfunctional criminal justice system. It is a criminal justice system that doesn’t protect people and it doesn’t control dangerous people and it doesn’t keep society safe. People have asked me what is my reaction and obviously I am deeply hurt about it but, again, I am not surprised because I deal with this criminal justice system every day. I know that injustice invades the lives of so many citizens. I am one now. My family is one now. So, it is very disappointing but regrettably not unexpected.”
