Leader of the Opposition Champions the Garifuna Language

John Briceño

The theme for this year’s celebration, when translated, is “Garifuna Language is the foundation of Garifuna survival.” Leader of the Opposition John Briceño also spoke at the official ceremonies in Dangriga.  In his speech, he championed the speaking of the language to help retain the culture. Here’s a snippet from his presentation.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We must take seriously the challenge placed before us today. That challenge was expressed in this year’s theme; Garifuna Language – when someone’s language is lost, the culture dissipates and eventually dies.    I join with your leaders in begging you to speak Garifuna to your children. Mothers, sing to your babies in Garifuna so that from early they can hear Garifuna words and they can be uplifted by the very sound of this colorful language. As for me, and the People’s United Party, we will continue to push for the teaching of Belizean History across the curriculum at all levels, in all our schools. We understand that Garifuna History is Belizean History. So, we commit to do our part to support the promotion of Garifuna culture and support programmes that will preserve the Garifuna language.”
