Independence Day Fire on Caye Caulker Caused by a Candle

While with the Fire Chief earlier today, the media got an update on the Independence Day fire on Caye Caulker during which one person lost his life in the blaze. Elmer Chub, a mechanic from San Jose Village, Orange Walk, perished in the fire that erupted inside a two-storey commercial building, which housed Nando’s Golf Cart Rentals and Apartments. A total of fourteen persons were also displaced by the inferno. Two months later, Colin Gillett reports that the fire was caused by a candle in a room adjacent to the one in which Chub was found.

“The police linked with our investigation and it started in one of the rooms because remember that building had smaller rooms at the bottom. It started in one of the corners in the rear. Apparently it was due to a candle; I think that’s what they said. Somebody fell asleep; the candle lit and just went from there. That’s as much as we know.”

“How much of an exacerbating factor was the fact that there was some confusion, according to the village chairlady, with B.E.L. being able to de-energize the lines?”

Colin Gillett

“Well if you’ve ever been to Caye Caulker, you see all these power lines; it made it very difficult for the people throwing water to not shock themselves. I don’t wanna say that it was a factor that stopped everything, but B.E.L. has its procedures and they have to carry out their procedures before they can actually out the electricity off.”

“But are you all able to fire-fight with hoses and water when the lines are energized?”

Colin Gillett

“Well our fire-fighters are very professional and they know exactly how they are supposed to attack it. That’s why in that fire, we had the truck on one side and another truck was on the other side to attack it from different fronts.”
