BECOL to BELPO – We Are Not Responsible

On November thirteenth we told you about the Belize Institute of Environmental Law and Policy concerns about the state of the Macal River. In that story, BELPO’s Candy Gonzalez made several allegations about the state of the river and claimed that hold and release of water at the dam was responsible for erosion and accumulation of rotting vegetation. Today BECOL responded to say that BELPO’s statements are not true and provided a point by point clarification which we air tonight. BECOL says that the erosion is being caused by deforestation. That deforestation and increased farming, according to BECOL, are also the sources of the rotting trees and plant debris downstream, as well as the turbid waters. BECOL points out that the land clearing debris upstream of the dam is stopped at the dam where they clear it out. It also notes that the mud and sedimentation resulted from the heavy rains and floods in recent weeks and couldn’t have been caused by the dam since upstream debris didn’t make it past the dams. BECOL asserts that their operations have never caused any problems to the fish nor did it contribute to a lack of water following the flood.
