F.F.B. Update on Belize’s Place in the CONCACAF Nations League

Marlon Kuylen

So, Belize won a match on Thursday night and they have another game on Sunday in the CONCACAF Nation’s League. These games are to help qualify for the 2021 Gold Cup. Vice-President of the F.F.B. Marlon Kuylen says that Belize needs that win in Grenada. He breaks it down for us to understand where Belize falls in the standings in this series of games to get to the Gold Cup.

Marlon Kuylen, Vice-President, F.F.B.

“CONCACAF has forty-one countries as their members. We are playing what is called the Nations League and the forty-one countries are playing for sixteen spots in the Gold Cup 2012. Now, the teams are all grouped into three leagues. We have League A for the top countries; League B which Belize is in and League C which is the lower bracket. Eight teams from the league A, eight winners automatically qualify for the Gold Cup. Then League B has four groups so the winners automatically qualify so that is twelve teams. The remaining four spots are played between the four second place teams in League B and then the winners in League C. So, Grenada has already won the group that we are in so they automatically qualify and Belize now with a win in Grenada, we move forward, we advance.”

“Is there a goal difference that they need to win by or they just need to win that match?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Just a win. Just a win will put us in.”

Andrea Polanco

“Looking at the team from Grenada, what do you think our chances are?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Well, first of all, there is tremendous parity in the group. While Grenada has won the group, yes, but the other three teams remaining, all of us still have a chance to go forward. Now, Grenada being that they already won the group, they have nothing more to play for. So,  I am predicting, rather than risking injury to their key players, they will be using some of their substitutes. So, that increases our chances against them.”

Andrea Polanco

“What do you think the team needs to do?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Remain focused on the job at hand; no distractions. It is tough when they play such a difficult match last night and they had to travel today. They won’t reach Grenada tomorrow evening until four o’clock so the recovery is very important. So, they have to rest, drink a lot of fluids and so forth. But the main thing is to remain focus and make Belize proud.”
