Mind Health Connect is Officially Launched

Mental health disorders can affect just about any person; the issue took centre stage recently when two persons lost their lives at the hands of persons diagnosed with mental health illness. Today, an organization was officially launched that seeks to connect persons who may be going through anxiety, depression, stress and the like with professional or support groups. Mind Health Connect was birthed some eight years ago by Martine King and Sahar Vasquez, who are both diagnosed with mental health conditions. Vasquez’s uncle, Nestor Vasquez Junior also had a mental illness and was mortally injured inside a holding cell by another mental health patient. Today, King and Sahar say that they are finally realizing their dream for the country.

“Personally and professionally, I know the suffering and the thought of having people suffer in silence and believing that there are not people out there who care or there is not a support system or there are not resources is just really unacceptable to me, especially in little Belize. I feel may be somewhat idealistic, but definitely we want to do something to help and that something for Sahar and I when we got together and we realized that we had really similar passions was to bring about an organization that people can count on to help.”

“I share my story very publicly with my mental illness and I think when you share something, it touches a person’s heart and it kinda opens them up to assist you in any way they can. So that how we do it. And then we also explain how important mental health is. Mental health is as important as physical health. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it is not there. You feel it and it’s painful. And so that’s what we are trying to stress.”
