Belize City fire leaves 4 homeless

Story Picture
An eighty-two year old grandmother and three grandchildren are homeless after a fire on Saturday gutted their house on West Street in Belize City. Doris Adolphus declined to appear on camera, but did describe the tragic events of that morning.

Doris Adolphus, Fire Victim

“I was washing upstairs in my bathroom, using the washing machine. So while I was washing, I took out the white clothes and placed them in put them in the tub in a pink bucket I had and I smelled like smoke. I didn’t see anything burning because the outlet was cased in. Then I heard the machine making a funny noise, like a clicking. So I decided to go call my grandson, Colin Tucker to see why the machine is acting like that. Going, Alex, Janicka and Cito run behind, saying “Gran come, in your room under the bed is burning. Fire!” I turned around and started running.”

Ann-Marie Williams

Do you know what caused the fire?”

Doris Adolphus

“Yes. It’s the wire.

Ann-Marie Williams

“When you left to go and get your grandson, you didn’t know the house was already under fire?”

Doris Adolphus

“No. I only smelt something and like I told you the machine was going “click”.

Ann-Marie Williams

Aren’t you glad the children made their way out the house?”

Doris Adolphus

“Yes. Thank God.”

Adolphus and her three grandchildren lost all their personal belongings as well as the house’s furnishings. Solid work by the fire service prevented the flames from spreading through the crowded neighbourhood.
