Another Case of Alleged Police Brutality in Belize City

A News Five team was doing its job at the Mahogany Street police station today when our crew came under attack. It happened when a witness was giving an interview about the unwarranted use of force against a father and son when the officer turned on our crew.  The witness identified the same officer as the cop who went to a barbershop and turned violent on the father and his son, a minor. But when the minor went to file a complaint, he was arrested. The beat-up was caught on camera and News Five’s Hipolito Novelo has a report.

News Five was in front of the Mahogany Street Police Precinct conducting an interview related to a case of police brutality when the eyewitness’s statement was interrupted by a bag of water hurled at us allegedly by one of the officers involved in the brutality.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“Unnecessary force was there because he told them… You saw how the police officer just threw water here. That same one there. That one behind the pickup just threw it because you were videoing it. Do you see how they behave and they are the law. Chester needs to put a leash on his people. They just stone us with water because we are out there making a complaint to the police to the media.”

News Five regards the officer’s action as intimidation which will not be countenanced.

That police officer appears in this video which shows a group of officers storming into a barbershop located on the corner of Western Avenue and Mahogany Street. Their presence there is unclear but what is obvious is the chaos that erupted seconds after.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“He defended his son. He told the officer that officer you cannot search my son because he is under fifteen. The police take it out of his hand and pushed the barber and two of them join in and started to beat up the barber. As I take my camera to video the situation the Spanish police he backed off. The dark skin one he went ahead to do what he needed to do. I was videoing all the while. The Spanish police came to try and knock my phone from out of my hand. And he was pulling the child and I told him to leave the child alone. When I was videoing he knocked my phone and I told him, knock my phone again. I videoed the entire scene. They pulled the man by his hair. The man wasn’t resisting arrest. The man was going willingly with the police so that they do their job. We are not stopping them from doing their job. But they didn’t have to beat up the man.”

During the chaos, the barber’s son was reportedly roughed up as well. The male minor visited the station to file a report against the police officer. He was arrested instead.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“The minor is in custody. When they brought the minor to make a report they hauled and pulled the minor and they hold the minor in custody with the minor. They are in there. They are beating up them. We are standing here for the past hour. We don’t know what is happening. They are not giving us any information. But you only hear screaming. One of the police lady even told us that they are beating up the man in there, to call this person and this other person. We called Queen Street Police Station and nobody has come as yet. We don’t know what is happening.”

“So they arrested the minor after he tried to make a police report against the police officer?”

Voice of Eyewitness

“Yes right here at the police station. They hauled and pulled him. They took him in and said they will charge the minor for bad words.   I just hope that Chester Williams put his dogs on leash and educate the people because they do not have any respect. As you can see we are here making a report and we brought the media because nothing would have come out of this and you see what that police man did? He threw water at us.”
