Charges Brought Following Deadly Explosion at Water Taxi Terminal

A deadly explosion that claimed the lives of a pair of siblings and injured fourteen others onboard a vessel on May fifth, has resulted in charges being filed against several parties, including the boat captain and two companies.  The Belize Port Authority conducted an investigation into the blast onboard the San Pedro Jet Xpress which occurred on the Haulover Creek at the foot of the Belize Swing Bridge.  The explosion killed sisters Yamiri and Kimberly Guy.  The outcome of the inquiry reveals that the explosion was the result of an accumulation of fumes from a fuel leakage inside an enclosed compartment.  That was ignited by a spark created when a wire attached to the bilge pump.  The Port Authority, in conclusion, has since brought charges against Ernesto Delgado who was identified as the master of the vessel at the time of the incident, as well as San Pedro Water Jets International and Ocean Ferry Belize.  Those charges include: loss of life by negligence, causing a vessel that was unsafe to be sent on a voyage and attempting to send a vessel that was unsafe on a voyage.  There is no word whether legal action will be taken against the respective parties by the families of the victims.
