Tracy Panton Says Gapi is Entitled to Privileges

Gaspar Vega

Minister Tracy Panton also responded to a question about former cabinet minister Gaspar Vega. As we’ve reported, while Vega resigned as a member of cabinet in 2017 due to a land scandal that involved his son, Andre Vega, the former deputy prime minister still enjoys significant ministerial perks. He is receiving roughly fifty thousand dollars annually, in take home pay as well as allowances for expenses, transportation and telephone. Vega is still being afforded round the clock personal police security, even though he has been inactive in government and has not been to House meetings for some time. Panton says that Vega is entitled to all the perks.

“Minister Vega is an elected area representative of the United Democratic Party and as such he is entitled to all the privileges that any elected area rep is entitled to. He has not been in cabinet; a decision was taken some time ago, but he is still making his contribution to the party. I don’t know that he has declared his formal interest to run for the next election, but I am sure that he will do all he can in his capacity to ensure that the party is battle ready come November 2020.”
