Ladyville Man Chopped, Stabbed to Death

Lee “Bambino” Lopez

The life of Lee “Bambino” Lopez was cut short on Sunday night in Ladyville, Belize District. Lee was hanging out with three persons he knew, on the street in front of his house.  An argument between the friends escalated and the forty-one-year-old constructor worker was stabbed to death before nine o’clock.  While he was known as a drinker, Lee was not a troublemaker, according to his friends. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

On Sunday night, the body of forty-one year old Lee “Bambino” Lopez lay at the entrance of his residence in Ladyville, in a pool of blood. Splattered on the gate was blood, believed to be Bambino’s. He had been fatally chopped and stabbed by persons he thought posed no harm.

It was about nine o’clock that night that Ladyville Police responded to a 911 call that led them to Heron’s Street. Before their arrival, the culprits had already vanished. Bambino’s long time friend, Sebastian Hamilton, says after hearing of his friend’s death he hurried to the scene.

Sebastian Hamilton, Friend of Deceased

“One lady passed by and she told me, Sebastian Bambino died.  I left home and when I came here I saw a lot of blood. I stood up there. The man died right there.  After that police come. I was over there when a lot of police came and pick up the body and take him.  I arrived about minutes to nine when this crime happened here.”

So the question now is…

Sebastian Hamilton

“Who killed Bino? That’s how we called him. Bino. Who killed Bino?  I don’t know who killed him. I don’t know who hurt him. I don’t know anything. I just came to see a body.”

Police have two persons detained and are looking for a third. Minutes before his untimely demise, Bambino was with some friends socializing when an argument erupted, turning fatal.

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“The investigation is showing that they were hanging in that particular area, drinking and an argument ensued at which a male person chopped the deceased.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do we know the nature of that argument? Was it a personal matter?”

Hilberto Romero

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“They were discussing some matter and that is where the incident originated from.”

Andrea Polanco

“The perpetrator and the victim were drinking together?”

Sr. Supt. Hilberto Romero

“The information we have is that they were drinking.”

Bambino was a known drinker in the village. Residents would frequently bid him the time of the day while he stood at the corner of the street. Hamilton says he doesn’t know Bambino to be a trouble maker.

Hipolito Novelo

“Did he tell you of any issues, beef, quarrel with someone recently?”

Sebastian Hamilton

“No. I don’t know about that.  He is a person when he drinks he minds the ‘barrio’. I don’t know what is a barrio because I am a Belizean. He stands at the former and everybody pass, ‘ya Bino; Si cholo’. I don’t know what is cholo either. He stands up at the corner like a capital K; he’s drunk. Ya Bino. Ya Cholo. I don’t know what is cholo and I don’t want to know what is cholo.”

Hipolito

“Did he use to give any problems, any issues? How as he? Was he calm? He use to fight?”

Sebastian Hamilton

“To me, no.   He is a construction man and does mason work. I know him for year. I don’t know if he has beef with somebody, problem with somebody, problem with me. I don’t know. I don’t really know if he a problem man. I know he stands up at that corner right there by the phone booth. Anytime he nice up. When you pass, Ya Bino, Ya Cholo. I don’t know what that is.”
